So, we are only a few hours away from MTV turning 30, and in honor of this VH1 Classic has been doing a marathon of just random old stuff, it's been interesting from what I've seen so far, but it's kinda all over the place and they are only showing certain clips. For instance they started showing an episode of Remote Control when the Red Hot Chili Peppers showed up and kick the contestants out cause they wanted to play, but then they only showed the first segment, then went to commercial and when they came back it was some Jenny McCarthy show thing, I was upset I wanted to see the rest of that Remote Control episode. Anyway, tonight at midnight they are gonna re-air the original 1st hour of programming that they first showed 30 years ago. It is kinda interesting that this stuff is all relegated to VH1 Classic, guess it makes sense since it is classic stuff, but it's MTV and shouldn't the original MTV be the one airing the original launch, guess they have too many crappy reality shows they they have to show replays of for the millionth time this week, or so everyone can get all caught up for the new season of Jersey Shore, and I can get ready to hang myself because of it. Anyway, they did actually show a clip from a show that debuted in 1998, that I was actually a big fan of and that was Celebrity Death Match, don't remember it, well here is a clip:
Yeah, it was a pretty good show, wrestling was getting pretty big again at the time and people really enjoyed making fun of celebrities, and Mills Lane was pretty popular because of his involvement in the Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield ear biting fight.
Another show debuted in 1998 on MTV, which I kinda discussed in the previously, and that was TRL, basically, this brought a whole bunch of new crappy pop music to all the teeny poppers, but it also got a lot of bands to change up style and try and get their stuff on TRL. So, 1998 was the start of the TRL era, which brought us groups like N'Sync:
Backstreet Boys took it to a new level:
These 2 groups wound then spawn like 20 others over the next 5 years or so, and they all were trying to get on TRL. TRL also helped this next 2 bands vault their popularity in 1998:
and George Michael helped this next band ruin rock for a while:
Marilyn Manson was back, and this time moreso just confusing people other then scaring people although he was probably still scaring a lot of people also:
Fatboy Slim had people repeating themselves with this hit:
Green Day had a huge hit in 1998, despite the fact that it was completely misinterpreted, it was meant to be sarcastic, but people didn't get it, probably because of Seinfeld:
Yeah, the song which is called Good Riddance (Time of You're Life) and it was written about song girl that Billy Joe broke up with, but with the Seinfeld thing and then it sorta because a Graduation song, the single actually came out as Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance) guess since it was getting plenty of airplay and whatever, Green Day didn't really care all that much:
Metallica were a little tired of making their own music, so they released a whole bunch of covers, including this one:
Rob Zombie had broken away from White Zombie and released his first solo album:
Aerosmith had their first and only number 1 hit:
Will Smith was still doing his Big Willie Style thing:
2Pac despite being dead, had a big hit thanks in part to Bruce Hornsby:
For whatever reason in 1998, female singers felt the need to start thanking everyone, Natalie Merchant was thanking everyone:
and Alanis Morrisette was Thanking everyone too, and for some reason she was doing it while being naked:
So, with that, just want to thank you for reading, cause you are My Hero:
Can't believe MTV is 30, more so cause I can't believe I'm gonna be 30 in a couple months, but hey, it's gotta happen sometime I guess. BTW, totally bought the new CM Punk shirt today, that thing is pretty awesome, forgot to mention in my last post he changed his song up, Cult of Personality is a great song, apparently he used it back in his Ring Of Honor days and wanted to bring it back, and surprisingly WWE were ok with it.
And lastly, some words of advice, whenever you use the phrase "I got nothing to lose" or some variation of it, be prepared to find out what you actually did have to lose, cause you will find out.
Man, maybe they should have a lockout in Football every offseason if this is what's gonna happen once it's over, all sorts of crazy action going on. Patriots did some big moves aquiring Albert Haynesworth from the Redskins and Chad Ochocinco from the Bengals. Yes, they could be some risky moves, but at the same time, Haynesworth is not guaranteed and Chad Ochocinco restructured his deal, so it maybe a low risk situation much like when the Pats got Randy Moss or Corey Dillon. Albert Haynesworth was a beast a few years ago in Tennessee, then after getting a huge contract to go to the blackhole that is the Washington Redskins, he then pretty much gave up for whatever reason. Chad Ochocinco on the other hand, has been slowly declining over the years, but that makes sense for a WR, but Carson Palmer is no Tom Brady and Chad Ochocinco pretty much had run his course in Cincinnati and needed to get out of town, and had been talking about playing the Patriots for a while now, so it's not a huge surprise that he did end up with the Patriots. So many other moves too, couldn't even keep track of all it, but I'm sure it will all sort itself out eventually and I'll figure out who is where.
So, recently for some reason the name Charlie Brown came up at work, and I started to think that I can really relate to Charlie Brown, and no I don't mean this one:
No, I mean the Charlie Brown from the Comic Strips and Cartoons. I don't totally understand it, I mean, he's supposed to be a little kid, but yet he has some serious adult problems, no, I mean what kids talks like this on Christmas?
and his whole downtrodden theme has become fodder for jokes by other shows:
His Halloween exploits always ended up with him getting screwed:
What kind of sick twisted people would give out rocks for Halloween, pretty messed up, and of course Charlie Brown always gets them, I feel like I can relate.
And yes, Charlie Brown also has plenty of issues with the ladies, whether it was his never ending hapless pursuit of the Little Red Haired Girl or of course his interactions with Lucy:
Yup, just like a chick to trick you with legal mumbo jumbo and then pull the ball away as you are about to kick it. Which leads to my next point, which was actually made by the guy that I featured last in my last post, before Will Smith got all jiggy with it, he was telling it like it is:
Ok, so moving on, Last Monday Night, saw a few returns on RAW, as part of the start of the Triple H era. Jim Ross returned to the announcer's table. John Morrison returned to confront R-Truth. The Show started off with Rey Mysterio defeating The Miz in the finals of the tournament to crown a new WWE Championship, but his reign would be short lived, despite dodging Alberto Del Rio's attempt at cashing in Money In the Bank, as Triple H ruled that since Vince McMahon was gonna fired John Cena last week and he wasn't included in the tournament, he should get his shot at the Title. So the main event saw Cena vs Rey for the title, and John Cena won and became a 9 time WWE Champion, beating Triple H's record of 8, but wait, what's this, it is the REAL WWE Champion:
That's right, CM Punk, after a one week hiatus is back. Now, did they jump the gun a little bit on this, I kinda think so, I feel like they could have teased his return for a while, had him show up and cause trouble despite not actually being in the WWE, but I guess the problem with all of that is that SummerSlam is less then 3 weeks away, and given that it is probably the 2nd biggest PPV of the year, kinda need to solidify the Main Event earliy enough to get people interested, so he took a week off and now is back, and clearly the Main Even will be Champion vs Champion Punk vs Cena. CM Punk was then featured on Jimmy Kimmel that same night:
and then the next day he taped a podcast with Bill Simmons that was posted yesterday: CM Punk on BS Report
It's a solid listen, most interesting tidbit was that he didn't decide that he was gonna stay in the WWE until the day of Money In the Bank, so I wonder what would have happened in that match had he not decided to stay that day.
Finally today, just saw the new trailer for Battleship, yes the movie that is based on the board game, but what?
Now, I played plenty of Battleship in my day, but what the hell is that thing that comes out of the water, I don't remember anything like that ever happening in any game of Battleship that I even played, but maybe I was playing the wrong version, I do remember they had that electric talking version, never played that one, maybe there was crazy stuff in that one:
Nope, not seeing it, oh well, movie looks pretty crappy. Personally I can't wait for the Yahtzee movie, kids killing their mom on Christmas, sounds like a thriller to me.
Ok, good, cause Football is back, the lockout is over and things are gonna start moving, now on the grand scale doesn't really seem like much changed, all pretty much just moving numbers around to see who gets what, they aren't expanding the season or anything crazy like that, at least not yet. But it's good that that's all over with, and things can get started on the season, I can start thinking about getting the Fantasy Football league going and start trying to figure out who I'm gonna keep and who is gonna go in what round and all sorts of cool nerdy stuff like that.
But, you still got to answer the question, Are you ready?
Well, if you aren't really, you should be, cause Triple H is taking over the WWE tonight, Vince is gone, and Triple H is running the show. They are planning on crowning a new WWE Champion as The Miz is taking on Rey Mysterio, but apparently there is another guy running around still claiming to be the WWE Champion, in fact he showed up and crashed the WWE party at Comic-Con last week:
CM Punk also showed up at and Indy event over the weekend, but didn't have the belt with him for that one. Also despite the fact that Bill Simmons said that he was gonna have CM Punk on his podcast, apparently he ended up having no way to contact him cause, he is "no longer" a employee of WWE, and that was the only way he had to get a hold him. What does this all mean, well, I would think that WWE is just doing a good job at trying to sell the fact that CM Punk is "gone", but would they really allow him to show up and crash their comic-con panel carrying the WWE Title with him, I don't think so. So, will CM Punk show up tonight at RAW and interfere in the title match? Maybe, or maybe they just want you to think he will, so you keep turning in to see what will happen. Also, what becomes of Vince McMahon, will he really go out without a fight, doesn't sound like him, will he be on Raw tonight? Should be good.
Speaking on Comic-Con, there was something else that made a big splash at comic-con, for me anyway, and that of course was the first clip of the New Beavis and Butt-Head. Haven't seen it? Well, then take a look:
They still got it. This actually transitions nicely to my next topic. Many of my loyal followers have noticed that I have been doing a countdown to the 30th anniversary of MTV, I was doing a pretty good job at it at one point, kinda fell off recently, but then I realize, we are 1 week away, so got to step it back up. I left off with 1996 and the death of Tupac, and now time to move onto 1997, but before we do that, there was something that happened in 1996 with MTV, that I failed to mention. 1996 launch the debut on MTV Films, and while the Beavis and Butt-Head Movie was the first memorable movie they had, it wasn't the first. The first was a terrible movie called Joe's Apartment, which the idea was taken form a short film that MTV would show from time to time in the early 90s, take a look:
Yeah, someone had the great idea of expanding that into a movie starring Jerry O'Connell, and he somehow landed Rebecca Romijn, How? Anyway, around Christmas of 1996, MTV release Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, which was a quality film. Now in 1997, Mike Judge debuted a new show on Fox called King of the Hill, so probably because of the Beavis and Butt-head movie along with working on his new show, I guess he kinda got burned out with Beavis and Butt-Head, so he decided to kill them off:
So, Beavis and Butt-Head were gone, every once in a while they would show up somewhere. Fast forward 13 years, King of the Hill is over, Mike Judge had another show fail, make some movies that were so great, so he finally decided, what the hell? let's bring Beavis and Butt-Head back, so there you go, they are coming back in October, pretty awesome.
Alright, so what else was happening in 1997 on MTV, well, the year kinda started off similar to how it ended, the East Coast vs West Coast rap war was still going strong, 2Pac was dead, and in March things would even up. Notorious B.I.G. would be killed, once again noone has any idea what happened, noone was arrested or anything, unsolved, but it seems pretty clear that someone, if they were with death row or just huge fans or boys or whatever, wanted revenge and got it. The bizarre thing about the whole deal was that he was out promoting his new album, with after his first album was called Ready To Die, this next one was called Life After Death, well, that ended up being true, cause before it was released, he was dead. Didn't stop him from having some big hits though:
Then after his death, Puff Daddy, as I think he was known at the time, really capitalized on this whole, eventually releasing an album that featured a tribute to BIG:
Now, he ripped of the Police, ok fine, but it got kinda weird, when shortly before the MTV Video Music Awards Princess Diana died in a car accident, and for whatever reason, I guess someone thought it was a good idea for Puff Daddy and Sting to perform some kind of hybrid mixed version in tribute of BIG and Diana:
But, if you are gonna talk about the death of Princess Diana, you have to talk about Elton John remaking his song Candle In The Wind changing the lyrics to honor Princess Diana and not Marilyn Monroe. It went on to become the 2nd best selling single of all time, next to Bing Crosby's White Christmas, now there wasn't really a music video for it or anything, so it doesn't really relate to MTV all that much, but it was a big thing that happened in the Music world, so needed to be mentioned.
1997, was the beginning of the music that would shape the late 90s, now while Boy and Girl bands had kinda died out in the US, for whatever reason in Europe, they were still going strong and were getting stronger then ever, but in 1997, it was just starting to trickle over, first up, these British Ladies came along and took the US by storm:
and then somehow this next group was "Back" even though they had never been here before, still don't understand how the hell that worked:
Now, it should be noted that Total Request Live was still a year away from debuting, which was where these groups and the many more that would follow, would make there marks on MTV, the show that would evolve into TRL, which was called MTV Live debut along with MTV's new studio in Times Square, that show didn't really work, the host kinda sucked and it was too all over the place, people didn't get it, but then they changed it around to a countdown show, and it worked out.
1997 was a decent year for one hit wonders, and while I have already covered Hanson, this next group were clearly the winners of the one hit wonders for that year:
Although this guy probably had the coolest video of the one hit wonders:
Rock Music was kinda all over the place in 1997, Metallica was still doing their Load thing, but this time it was Re-Load:
Megadeth actually had probably their most successful mainstream album, along with their highest charting song:
Marilyn Manson was still doing his thing, terrifying and horrifying you, your mother and anyone else he and they wanted to:
But not to be outdone with creeping people out, Tool was back with some weird ass videos, including this one:
The Foo Fighters were still Fighting Foo with a new album and had a really cool video for their song Everlong:
U2 was back, but not better then ever, they went all Pop, and it wasn't good. They also had a somewhat unsuccessful tour and also had the unfortunate please of having a concert special that aired on NBC and got the worst primetime ratings of all time, until it was broken by the XFL. With all of that said, they had a couple videos:
"Punk" rock or whatever you want to call it was back, first The Offsring made their major label debut and follow up to Smash, with Ixnay on the Hombre and Gone Away:
Then later in the year, Green Day came back on the scene with Nimrod and Hitchin' a Ride:
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had a huge year, having their biggest success with this song:
Wuss rock was still alive and well in 1997, this next group, I thought was just Seven Mary Three and that they had a new album out, but it wasn't it was Creed:
This next song I feel like was was too happy, especially for the actual content of the song and I think ended up in a ton of movies, commercials and trailers, or maybe it just seemed that way:
I'm not really sure where this next group falls, but they had a big hit this year and a cool video:
These next 2 groups would go on and have huge years in 1998, but they both had some success in 1997 and they while the first 1 kinda discovered the 2nd one, which not necessarily a good thing, they are now forever linked for better or worse:
Finally 1997 can not be discussed without talking about this next guy, not only did he have a huge movie with Men In Black, but after dumping DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince monocure, Will Smith broke out some Big Willy Style and got jiggy with it:
Well, there you go folks 1997 through the memories or the eyes and ears of a 15/16 year old.
One last thing, what the hell is going on the the Mosquitoes this year, those things are ruthless, despite wearing bug spray, I've been brutalized more then once so far this summer. Not cool bugs, not cool.
Holy Crap in a coconut King Kong Bundy, what the hell just happened? Crazy couple of nights in the world of professional wresting, so let's just get right into it, and if you haven't watched Money In the Bank or Raw and plan to and don't want to know what happened, just skip this part, or come back and read this later. So, Sunday night was the Money In The Bank PPV, which had a lot of anticipation surround it because of the whole situation with CM Punk, who contract was set to expire at Midnight, was challenging John Cena for the WWE Championship and if he won, was planning on leaving with the Title, but furthermore, if that were to happen Vince McMahon would then fire John Cena. So, the PPV was a pretty solid show all around. Daniel Bryan won the Smackdown Money in the bank match, bit of a surprise, Mark Henry injured Big Show, whatever, Women's match, fine. Alberto Del Rio won the Raw Money in the bank match, which really wasn't much of a surprise, kinda figured it would be him, or maybe the Miz. Then things took a some surprising turns. Christian beat Randy Orton by DQ, and because of the stipulation in the match, that meant that Christian became the World Heavyweight Champion, then Randy Orton went nuts and beat the hell out of Christian. Bit of surprise to me on this one, kinda figured that Orton was gonna win this one and put this feud to bed, and maybe start something up with Sheamus or Kane, but looks like this feud will continue onto Summerslam at least. Finally it was time, the big Main Event in CM Punk's hometown of Chicago, which pretty much made him the good guy in this whole thing, and Cena pretty much got Boo'd out of the building, not even bothering to do his full on ring entrance. Well, what can I say about the match, other then it was excellent, best match probably since The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 26, maybe even better then that, might have to go back to their match at 25, which I actually think was better, but anyway. Lots of back and forth, false finishes all over the place, eventually Vince McMahon and his new goon John Laruinaitis, who for the uneducated, is basically in control of talent relations or something like that, he's a former wrestler, and is the brother of Joe Laurinaitis who was Road Warrior Animal from the Legion of Doom, who in turn is the father of James Laurinaitis, who was a stand out Linebacker for Ohio State, and now plays for the St. Louis Rams, or at least did last year and might this year, if all goes well in the next week and the lockout ends. Anyway, McMahon and Laurinaitis come out, who by the way, doesn't hold a candle to Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson in terms of being Vince McMahon's goon. Cena eventually gets Punk in the STF, and immediately Vince McMahon starts calling for the bell, ala the Montreal Screwjob, noone sees him, so Laruinaitis runs down, which prompts Cena to let go of the hold, and knock out Laruinaitis, which allows Punk to set up Cena for the GTS and win the WWE Title. The place goes nuts, Vince McMahon starts flipping out, gets on the headset and calls for Alberto Del Rio to come out and cash in his Money In the Bank. Alberto Comes out, but before the match can start, Punk kicks him in the face and runs into the crowd and out of the arena with the title. If you get a chance to watch it, it's worth a watch. So, what does this mean, did Punk really re-sign and this is the start of an angle, did they say, what the hell, give him the title, noone will expect it, I'm not sure, but either way, CM Punk wasn't too shy about partying with the belt: CM Punk Having Fun with WWE Title Belt
Plus he was then tweeting some crazy things about it, and even posted some pictures of it in some weird places:
Then he took it to the Cubs game:
Notice he removed the John Cena nameplate by this point. The Cubs game was where he was at last night, even ending up on TV a few times:
That's him right about the catcher. So, he is at the Cubs game in Chicago, while Raw was live in Green Bay, so what does this all mean. Well, I kinda have a hard time believing that if he was really leaving that they would allow him to keep the belt and not only keep it, but flaunt it all over Chicago, so something tells me something was worked out and he'll be back, hell, maybe he was never gonna leave in the first place and this has all been part of the plan since way back in the beginning of the year when he and other people first started talking about this. But anyway, what would happen on Raw without a WWE Champion, and what would Vince do with John Cena. Well, Raw started off with Vince telling everyone that there would be a tournament to crown a new champion and that he would deal with Cena later in the show. So, The tournament goes out and it comes down to Rey Mysterio and The Miz in the Finals, but before the match could happen, Vince comes out and tells us that they are running short on time and the finals will happen next week so that he can deal with Cena, now this to me tells me that CM Punk maybe on Raw next week and get involved with that match. But before we get to that, here is what transpired between Vince and Cena:
Wow, did not see that one coming, So Vince McMahon is gone and now Triple H is in charge, now granted this isn't the first time that they have written Vince McMahon off of TV, for instance 4 years ago this happened:
Of course he was back just a few weeks later, then there was this incident:
Hell, even last year the Nexus put Vince in a "Coma" and he was "braindead":
So, what now, is Vince really gone, well storyline and TV wise, is CM Punk really gone? Will we get a new WWE Champion next week? What does Triple H have in store? Maybe the newly unemployed CM Punk and Vince McMahon will join forces, who the hell knows, but it should be interesting. Also, if you are a fan of Bill Simmons from ESPN, he is going to be having CM Punk on his Podcast sometime this week, that should be good, check that out when you can.
So, in other news this weekend Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony broke up, and while I normally don't really care about this kinda of stuff, and honestly I still don't, but I happened to be hanging out with some people that night and mentioned it, someone then was talking about how they were next to someone in their car and they were blasting "Waiting For Tonight", so I asked if they played "Jenny From the Block" to which she said that was the next song that came on, I then went on to say that song:
Samples, or stole it's hook from the Beatnuts:
Meanwhile I had my ipod playing music, and of course the next song that came on was The Beatnuts "Watch Out Now" it was messed up, there was definitely like a weird pause as we all looked at each other and wondered how the hell that just happened. The ipod was completely on random, noone touched it. I was then accused of using some kind of wizardry, which was not the case at all, but it does bring me to my next topic.
The New and Final Harry Potter Movie came out this weekend and broke all sorts of box office records including the all time highest grossing opening weekend, beating the 3 year old Record of The Dark Knight, which was $158.4 million, and is now $169.2 million. So, for Harry Potter it all come full circle as when the first once came out back in 2001, it set the record at $90.3 million beating out the 4 year old record of The Lost Word: Jurassic Park, which set it at $73.1 million all the was back in 1997, that Harry Potter movie would not have that title long as Spider-Man would overtake it only six months later. Of course it should be noted that attached to this Harry Potter movie was the first trailer for the sequel to the movie it dethroned, The Dark Knight Rises, and while I don't necessarily think that people were going to Harry Potter just to see the Batman Trailer, which was the cause back in 1998 when people were going in droves to Meet Joe Black, a 3 hour long romantic film with Brad Pitt, cause it had the first trailer for Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace Attached to it, of course in those days of dial up internet it was as easy to just look it up online, like I can now, so if you haven't seen it, here is the Trailer for The Dark Knight Rises:
So, lets see what happens in a year, I think we might see this record broken again.
Breaking Bad returned this past Sunday, it was pretty awesome, and I don't want to ruin anything cause people might have missed it or maybe are still catching up on the first three seasons, and if you are not, you should be, get them anyway you can and start watching. It should be noted that since there was a bigger wait this year between seasons, Bryan Cranston who had won the Emmy for best actor in Drama 3 years in a row, is not eligible to win, as was present when they announced the nominees last week, I'm get more into those as we get closer to the actual awards, I'll make my predictions and so forth, I have some issues with the whole process, mainly what they consider to be guest stars as opposed to people actually on the show, don't really understand the criteria.
Finally, want to address something that I spoke upon in my last post. I said some stuff about hating someone, and apparently my hatred is powerful, now am I saying that I am Darth Vader or Carrie and my hate has some kind of special powers or something, no, probably not, and I'm sure the whole situation is just one big coincidence, but still I never wanted anyone to get hurt, and now I feel bad. So, I'm going back on my statement, I do not hate anyone, in fact I love everyone, everyone is great. Ok, that's probably going a little to far, but rather then hating people, I have come to the conclusion that it's probably better to "nothing" people. Like I don't like you, I don't dislike you, I don't love you, I don't hate you, I nothing you. So, there it is, kinda of like the song by Pearl Jam "Nothingman":
Thanks for reading, have a great time.
How y'all feel out there? Alright, just a few things today that I need to update or get off my chest or whatever the case may be. First off, it was pointed out to me that in my post from last week entitled Hello Again, Hello, which by the way, yes is a reference to this Neil Diamond song:
That jacket is amazing btw. Anyway, there was a reason behind the Neil Diamond thing was because on the 4th of July, on my Facebook page I posted this video:
cause it was 4th of July and all, anyway, my Brother in law was there and then started trying to figure out the name of what he thought was a Neil Diamond song, so I then ran through pretty much his whole catalog, so I then had Neil Diamond on my mind, as it turned out, the song he was thinking of was not Neil Diamond at all, it was James, this song:
Not really sure why he thought that was Neil Diamond, but anyway, where was I? Oh right, so, it was pointed out to me in that post that I completely left something out, when I was explaining the whole thing about hanging out in my backyard chatting it up with some people, and movies and whatever were brought up, then what blew my mind, that one of the ladies hanging out went to Goshen College in Indiana, and another was from Goshen, New York, well, somehow I completely forgot the whole other part of that thing, the lady that went Goshen College, was born in Wooster, OH, meanwhile my buddy was born in Worcester, MA. Now while they are spelled completely different, they are pronounced the same, so yup, my mind was blown, not once, but twice. So, just want to thank Tessa, born in Wooster, OH, and she grew up tall and she grew up right with those Indiana Boys on them Indiana Nights while attending college at Goshen in Indiana. Previously I think I referred to her as Guadalupe, but apparently that's just her maid name, and anytime she wants to clean my apartment, she can. Meanwhile from Worcester, MA, the new star of the Toucher and Rich show on 98.5 the Sports Hub, ladies and gentlemen, Matty Gumbo:
Ok, so here's what happened, a few days ago, Brandon Meriweather, the safety for the New England Patriots, released a rap single called VIP that was played on Toucher and Rich: Brandon Merriweather - VIP
So, then my buddy Matt did that acoustic version as shown above, so then Wednesday, Toucher and Rich decided to play it at the beginning of their show: Toucher and Rich - July 13th
Crazy, but there it is, I'm actually not sure what part of this story is more ridiculous, that fact that Brandon Meriweather did a rap song, the fact that Matt did the acoustic version, the fact that Toucher and Rich actually played it, then Brandon Meriweather actually acknowledge it on twitter, or the fact that he's calling himself Matty Gumbo. Whatever.
So, they say there is a thin line between love and hate:
Now, while I've never actually been in love or anything, I don't think I've truly ever hated anyone, extreme dislike, but never hate. Now, I'm sure there are people that have hated me, and in fact right now I know of one, which leads me to my point, I feel like I may hate this person now, it's a weird feeling, but you know what, The Offspring once told us a little something about this:
So, there you go, I mean, give the choice, I would rather not hate, but when all else fails, like the title of my last post and the Soundgarden Song says, Hate if you want to Hate, if it makes you safe, if it makes it brave:
Now, this one is a bit weird, but I was listening to the song Water's Edge by Seven Mary Three, which was their other song after Cumbersome. But I was actually listening to this song, what exactly is this song supposed to be about. He went down to the water and saw some guys kill someone but didn't do anything to help and then just left, I'm really confused, and it's kinda a dark song, what the hell, the video doesn't help out matters much either:
Alright, well, I'll leave you on that lovely note, but before I go, got one more thing for you. Pipe Dreams vs Pipe Bombs, I'm not sure which is worse.
Took in the Soundgarden show at the Comcast Center on Sunday night. I had never seen them before, given that they broke up 14 years ago and I didn't really start going to concerts until about 13 years ago, so just missed them. But they are back together and they sounded damn good. Played a good set, pretty much played all their hits, with the exceptions of Pretty Noose, kinda a surprise and their new song Black Rain, which was an outtake to begin with, so probably not their first pick of a song to play anyway. I guess Bleed Together and Rhinosaur were semi hits that they didn't play either. They actually only played Blow Up The Outside World and Burden In My Hand from Down On The Upside, they mostly played stuff off of Badmotorfinger and Superunknown, which was fine with me, actually, here's the setlist:
So, as you can see a pretty solid set, especially for someone who, like me is a big Soundgarden fan, but not really a diehard. They didn't really play a ton of stuff off their old albums. I was surprised that they played Big Dumb Sex though, kinda of an odd song for them to play, did not expect to hear it, but it was kinda cool that they played it. I guess Soundgarden are working on a new album, but they didn't play anything new, which is kinda nice, not that I wouldn't like to hear something new, but not really at that moment, I'm sure they realize people haven't seen them either at all or in many years, so they just want to hear their favorites. I'm sure they will put out a new album and do a bigger tour down the road and then play the new stuff. The concert scene was pretty good, tailgating was a good time, met some cool people, good age range, noone too old and boring, and not young idiots being stupid and ruining it for everyone. Cops weren't being douchebags, they were letting people drink, only thing I saw them do was search some guys car for some reason, but they didn't appear to find anything and nothing happened, which is nice. Wasn't really a big crowd, maybe cause it was a Sunday night, it certainly wasn't sold out, they didn't even open the Lawn, in fact didn't look like they had even used the Lawn at all this year, was still green and not beat up at all. So, bottomline if you get a chance to see Soundgarden at some point, do it.
So then, last night, would have been cool to get to go and see what could have been CM Punk's last night on RAW at the Garden, granted storyline wise, it "could" have been John Cena's last night as well, but as even CM Punk joked around, that's not happened, especially after he already got "fired" last November and was back a week later. Anyway, didn't end up going, so just had to watch on TV and I was flipping back and forth between that and the Home Run Derby, which was looking promising for Adrian Gonzalez, who for some reason was trending on twitter as Adrian Gonzales? did he change his name at some point, did I miss something. Anyway, while CM Punk and Vince McMahon may actually have been having some serious negotiations, they had some "Negotiations" on RAW last night, and if you didn't see it, check it out:
Pretty good stuff, but the one thing that probably sticks out is the reaction the Ice Cream Bars got, now if you have no idea what he was talking about, well man, you missed out. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the WWF, as it was know at the time had these awesome Ice Cream Bars, you could get them pretty much anywhere, all the Ice Cream Trucks had them, you could get them at the Stores, they were everywhere, then somewhere along the line, they became a lot harder to find, until they eventually they stopped making them all together. What they were were a big cookie on the front that had a Chocolate imprint of a Wrestler, then there was Vanilla Ice Cream in the middle and the back was a Chocolate shell, it tasted awesome and it also came with a Wrestling Trading card. Well, if you can't picture it, here's what it looked like:
Still don't remember, well maybe Brutus The Barber Beefcake can help you out:
or maybe George The Animal Steele:
Ok, anyway, getting back to CM Punk, this Sunday should be interesting, it seems like that he really is leaving, unless something has changed recently, so, I don't see anyway that he ends up winning unless something did, but we could be heading to some kinda of Montreal Screwjob type thing, although, it's certainly a different situation, so I wouldn't except any legit screwjob to happen, but this is the first time in a long time that I don't think many people know exactly what is gonna happen in that match. Anyway it should be interesting. Kinda upset I didn't get to go to RAW, apparently they'll be back in Boston for another RAW on Monday, November 14th. So, maybe I'll go to that maybe not, who knows.
One last thing, so far my selling out is not panning out to great, only got 2 clicks on the ads, which somehow by some weird equation equals to $0.31, so if you want to help me out, so that I don't starve, just click the ad, come on, do it.
Ok, folks, you may or may not notice a change in my blog, there are now ads on it, cause apparently I can make some money doing this whole blog thing. I looked into before and it seemed like a lot of hassle for nothing, but after it was mentioned to me recently, I looked more into it and doesn't seem like that big a deal. So basically, if you are reading this and see the ads, just click on them, you don't have to buy anything or do anything, just cliek on them, and it keeps track and for every time someone clicks on an ad, I get money, probably like a cent or something, hey and who knows, maybe the ad will be for something cool and you'll actually buy something. It's supposed to have ads that are somehow relevant to the content of my posts, which seems like it has so far, cause I've been seeing Bruins Stanley Cup stuff so far, so that's pretty cool. If it ends up being annoying or whatever, I'll get rid of it, but for now, let's see what happens, so click away, I can't, that apparently violates it. If you want to call me a sell out, then go ahead, but if you want to make me rich, click the ads.
Ok, so about 3 hours away from heading down to Great Woods/Tweeter Center/Comcast Center for the Soundgarden show, which should be pretty awesome, so what that in mind, here's some Soundgarden for you, to either get you pumped up for the show, if you are going like me, or to show you what you'll be missing.
Does the Spoonman actually tour with them, cause that would be pretty cool, I'm guessing he doesn't. Oh well.
Click the ads, buy the crap, subliminal messages, it's like They Live, put on the sunglasses.
Well, it's been a long time since I last made a blog post, not sure why, just had stuff going on, and not a whole hell of a lot to blog about, so haven't. Now, I'm back and just want to dive into some random crap as usual. First off, Bruins won the Stanley Cup, which I covered last time, but what I didn't discuss was that this now completes my sports life, Patriots won 3, Red Sox 2, Celtics technically 3, but I don't really remember the first 2, and now the Bruins, so I guess with that out of the way, I can now devote myself to study the other mystery of the universe..... Women.
Staying with sports for a moment, Red Sox were doing well, then had a little issue with some National League teams as well as some injuries, but they have found themselves back into first place last night. Nadal lost Wimbeldon after winning French Open. Jimmy McIlroy beat Chazz Michael Michaels to win the US Open, oh wait, I'm sorry, that was Rory McIlroy, but check out who was hanging out with his dad:
Yup, none other then Shane O'Mac, Shane McMahon. Apparently he is on the board of directors of the management company that represents Rory, he's been doing a lot of different stuff since leaving WWE, and he's a long way since this:
and speaking of the McMahons, if you didn't happen to catch CM Punks promo from a couple weeks ago on RAW, it was pretty interesting and entertaining, at least for die hard wrestling fans, casual fans probably didn't know what he was talking about most of the time, but in any event, it was fun and if you missed it, here it is:
Anyway, then Vince Suspended him and took away his title match, but last week, John Cena complained and said he CM Punk should be able to speak his mind and he wanted the match, so then Vince said that he didn't trust Cena to win and didn't want Punk leaving with the title, so if Cena were to lose, Vince would then Fire him. Which means that this upcoming Monday will be CM Punk and possibly John Cena's last night on RAW, and guess what, it's in Boston, originally I wasn't planning on going cause I'm going to Soundgarden the night before, but now I kinda want to go, so if I can find someone else that wants to go and can get some cheap tickets, I might consider it.
I hope everyone out there enjoyed their 4th of July weekend, well atleast for those readers that are in the US and celebrate, Happy Canada day for all the Canadian readers, and I'm not sure if there were any other holidays around the globe recently, but if there were, hope they were good ones. 4th of July, brings up a interesting point, would this holiday be as a big deal if lets say Independence Day was February 7th? There wouldn't be BBQs, fireworks wouldn't be as fun, people wouldn't be hanging out around pools and stuff, seems like the founding fathers did a really good job picking a day for this one. Nice work boys. Anyway, had a nice little BBQ on Saturday, it was fun, met a couple new people who seem pretty cool and good time all around. Next night took in some fireworks with some of the same people, also a good time. I did put on a nice display with my vast knowledge of useless information as it retains to movies and tv shows and such, check out this crazy connection. So the Movie What About Bob? came up, I then commented about how the kid in that movie, Charlie Korsmo, did that movie, Dick Tracy and Hook, which I just recently watched, which lead to being shown a recent picture of Robin Williams who is looking pretty old these days, anyway then he didn't do anything for like 7 years and was in Can't Hardly Wait, then hasn't done anything else. So then, somehow the movie She's The Man came up, starring Amanda Bynes when she pretend to be a guy, this lead me to say that that movie was a rip off of Just One of the Guys, but I couldn't remember who was in it, so then after someone looked it up and named some of the people, I remembered that the brother in that movie was played by Billy Jayne(Jacoby) who would later go on to star in Parker Lewis Can't Lose, but he also had a brother Bobby who was in one memorable episode of Wonder Years as the bully Eddie Pinetti, who then starts dating Winnie, but Kevin gets into a fight with him, but anyway, he would then later go on to be in Can't Hardly Wait, so it all came back around. Course then as it turned out, 2 of the people this conversation was with one went to Goshen College in Indiana, and the other was from Goshen, NY, which blew my mind. Then of course, Goshen, NY sounded so familiar to me, but I had no idea why, then I realized, I mail stuff to National Integrity in Goshen, NY all the time for work, which lead to to realize that I need a vacation.
Ok, enough of that crap, it is now time to tell you, Where It's At in terms of 1996 and music and MTV. Monumental year for MTV, as on the 15th anniversary, they launched MTV2, which at the time was supposed to be 24 hours of music videos, cause MTV had started to turn into more of what it is today, by having a lot more show and playing less videos, of course MTV2 would eventually turn into exactly the same thing. So, lets start with Where It's At, as Beck was back with a new album and this was his first single:
Interestingly enough, this video ended up cause quite the controversy, not because of the content or anything like that but when Beck won the MTV VMA for Best Male Video for this song, it broke up Van Halen, but hold on, cause Van Halen had already broken up 2 months earlier, let me explain. Early in 1996, Van Halen was asked to do a song for the soundtrack of Twister, the Helen hunt Tornado movie, and apparently while they were recording this song Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen got into a bit of a fight, but they eventually finished the song:
Eventually the fight boiled over and Hagar either quit or was fired. So, with no singer again, Van Halen decided to go back to the well and rehire David Lee Roth and made their return at the VMAs, presenting the VMA for Best Male Video:
Well, Eddie wasn't too happy with the way David Lee Roth acted during this and the way he upstaged Beck as he was getting his award, so not too long after, David Lee Roth was fired.
Speaking of controversy, Metallica was strumming up some among their fans, cause they were back, with a new look and a new sound, and the diehard fans thought they were selling out, and while their music was appealing to a wider audience then they had been before, some of it was not bad and they sold a lot of albums and made a lot of money, this was their first since:
Angry aggressive heavy music was really hitting it's stride in 1996, Rage Against the Machine was back with a new album and had a lot of success with it:
Pantera was back with a new album which was just has heavy and angry as ever, and probably scaring and scarring little children:
But, if we are gonna talk about someone who was really scaring and scarring, not just children, but people in general, this next band, or individual hit it big on the scene in 1996 and we were in for a wacky ride:
This next group, well, I never really knew what to make of them, there music was all over the place, but this song was pretty awesome and had some success, plus the band just had a great name Butthole Surfers, whatever it means:
Some may consider those guys a one hit wonder, and maybe they are maybe they aren't they had a semi hit a few years earlier with Who Was In My Room Last Night. but when speaking of 1996 and one hit wonders, there were a few, but noone like these guys:
Man, I freaking hated that song and that dance and everything about that whole thing, lets just move on. Grunge music was on it's last legs, but Soundgarden was still going strong in 1996 and had a new album, which was good, but not as good as it's previous:
Not really sure what the fallout of grunge music was really called, but I guess these guys would have to qualify as the leaders of that, and they made this pretty cool video mocking those weird Mentos commercials from back in those days:
Speaking of funny videos, Weird Al was back in 1996, and he was taking it too Coolio, although apparently Coolio was less then Coolio about this, however they still had fun with it:
and Weird Al had a great video:
Alanis Morissette was back and would confuse people as to what being Ironic actually is:
Dr, Dre brought us Blackstreet:
311 had everyone up in arms about what exactly their name was all about:
Bones, Thugs N Harmony had a big hit:
But, 1996's biggest music news would come in September, as on Sept 7th, 1996 in Las Vegas after this Mike Tyson vs Bruce Sheldon boxing match:
2Pac and Suge Knight were driving to the after party, when a car pulled up next to them and started unloading shots on it, 2Pac was hit pretty bad and was taken to the hospital, and a few days later on Friday, September 13th, 1996, this happened:
Yup, 2Pac was dead, and while he didn't kill himself like Kurt Cobain did, noone knows who did, the murder case has still gone unsolved and much like the OJ case, they search for the killer continues. Now, it has been widely assumed that someone in connection with Notorious BIG or Puff Daddy or Bad Boy records or whatever were involved, but noone really knows. If you want to check out a pretty cool documentary about this, ESPN 30 for 30 did a piece called One Night In Vegas.
Well, folks it had been a while, but the blog is back, and I hope you enjoyed it, leave with something that happened last night, if you were watching the Red Sox game, you might have caught this:
Only Don and Jerry, it went on for quite some time.
