Ok, let's get right to it, Friday night the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 in game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, and it was awesome, I was there and here are some pictures to prove it:
Ok, kinda gonna be all over the place today, and for those of who that are friends with me on facebook and actually look at my posts and stuff, some of this stuff might repeat some things, but that need to be put in the blog. First of all, in honor of the Bruins making the Finals and just for Hockey in general, got to share what is and probably always has been my favorite cartoon of all time, enjoy:

Just want to make a quick little observation, the new progressive commercials with that guy telling everyone about how much he saved cause they told him the other brands prices are whatever, is it just me or does that guy seem a little bit like Keith Stone from the Keystone commercials? Anyone? No? Come on, just agree with me.
So, I was watching some more stuff with the Macho Man, and I came across something that I always loved when I was a kid, and it featured the Macho Man, now out of context it's probably even better, but the whole feud between Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat was awesome, so, just enjoy the whole thing:
Ok, so there is obviously a lot of stuff here, but if nothing else, check out the 3rd part, towards the beginning Macho Man starts talking to Bruno Samartino, and then Bruno calls Macho Man a piece of slime and attacks him, I always loved that part "YOU PIECE OF SLIME!!!" Also, later in part 3, there is one report where Steamboat is trying to talk again and is trying to say the letter E and can't and then gets really upset, it's fantastic, the whole thing is fantastic.
Moving on, met this girl last night, who's name may or may not have been Guadalupe, didn't matter, that's what I was calling her, probably the reason she stopped talking to me, but whatever, not the point, she was apparently from Ohio, but she had some connection to Belize, now I know nothing of Belize, I have no idea where it even is, but for whatever reason when I heard Belize, it made me think of this:
and you know what, they mention Ohio too, so even more reason to think of this song. Interesting note, of course this was the theme song to the kids game show that was on PBS in the 90s, and it was performed by Rockapella, who, I actually saw sing the National Anthem at a Red Sox game one time, so yeah, I'm pretty damn awesome, take that Carmen San Diego, wherever you are, you too Guadalupe.
On facebook, there is the thing called poking, I've known of it, but never really understood exactly what it was or the point of it, someone explained it to me, still don't really get the point of it but whatever, it does remind me of on Napster you could "finger" people, let's just say that back in college, I had a lot of fun with that, to the point that people stopped talking to me. I guess I'm just annoying, oh well.
Well, ladies and gentlemen it's time once again to relive the past, this time around we will dive into 1993. 1993 was a monumental year for me for a few reasons, graduated from Elementary School and moved on to Middle school, so that was cool, but also it was the year that I really got into music, and as crazy as this sounds now, really into MTV, cause the M used to still stand for Music at that point. So, as I really started to get into music at this point, it was also the time where I really started to make my own opinions on what I liked and didn't like rather then just listening to whatever was Popular, so while that was all well and good, it might make this journey back through time a little difficult, cause while some of this stuff was out there and I liked, maybe it wasn't all that popular, and on the flip side, maybe there was stuff that was popular that I didn't like, but whatever I will do my best. Now, I've already been over some stuff that went down in 1993 way back when I first started this blog, and I generally don't like to repeat myself, but I'll switch it up a bit. So, I've been over the whole Tag Team Whoomp there it is vs 95 South Whoot there it is thing, like I said Tag Team won that war, but they wouldn't let it go, what do I mean by that, well, later in 1993, The Addams Family sequel, Addams Family Values was coming out, and since they had so much success promoting that movie by getting Hammer involved and his song Addams Family Groove, don't remember it, well here it was from 1991:
Well, now it was 1993, Hammer wasn't to be found, as he was busy trying to reinvent himself, but that's next year, so in steps Tag Team, now maybe they could have written a new song, I don't know, but instead they just did a remix of Whoomp There It Is, and it went a little something like this:
Ok, fine, whatever they still wanted to make some more money of their one hit, so whatever, but it wouldn't end there. fast forward a few months, the Houston Rockets win the NBA Championship, and for some reason Tag Team were happy about this I guess, even though they are from Atlanta? Anyway, in honor of the Rockets winning, they released another version called Hoop There It is. Unfortunately this was pretty exclusive to Houston, as I have never heard it, and can't seem to find it anywhere on the internet, which is sad, but you know what, it doesn't end there, a year later Tag Team was not through, I thought you know. That's right cause when Disney comes knocking on your door and want you to do another remix with Mickey Mouse for Donald Ducks birthday party, well you just have to do it. So, Whoomp! There It Went:
Luckily this would be the end of it and the last we would see from these guys, but no, not the song, yup they lent it out to some people and that was when this happened:
Good God, oh well, the song was also mentioned in a recent AT&T commercial for the iPhone, when the guy says it was 1995, and the other guy says it was 1993, yup it was 1993, but to be fair to the other guy, he may have been thinking of Whoomp! There It Went.
So, believe it or not there was plenty of other things going on in 1993 other then Whoomp There It is. Like for instance someone who I have already featured on the blog way back as a joke because it was Snowing out, yup Informer was a huge hit in 1993, but I've already covered that, but does anyone else remember his other song:
Now, while Snow was doing his white boy rapper, Canadian, reggae, murder trial thing, real rap was heading in a newer direction, that would also shape the 90s similar to grunge, I made a brief reference to it at the end of the last post, but 93 was when Gangsta Rap really took off, sure it had been around for a while NWA was around back in the 80s, but things didn't really get going until The Chronic came out and this song blew up:
Not to be outdone, Dre's former partner in crime in NWA was also putting out some good music back in 1993, you know before he started doing kids movies and shows and Coors Light Commercials, arguing with a bottle:
Also getting his first real exposure in 1993 was this man:
Then of course after making himself known with Dre, Snoop decided to break out on his own at the end of 1993, and well this happened:
Now, sticking with this theme, and I'm not really sure if these next few groups really fit in the same category as the previous ones, like, they're not really Gangsta rap per se, well, I don't know, make up your own mind, but they were big in 1993:
Yeah, I would never really consider myself a big rap or hip hop guy, but this stuff was still pretty good back in the day, not sure where things went bad for me, but I enjoyed this stuff for the most part. Of course what would any year be without some 1 hit wonders, and there were some in 93, not as much as 92, but still, for instance, these guys:

I was never really sure what was going on with this next group, and not sure anyone else did either, but whatever they had this one hit and then hit the bricks:
Not really sure what to say about this next video other then Whoa!:
Now this next song is certainly a one hit wonder, but I'm not really sure if this is the right year to have this, yes it did come out in 1993, but I feel like it wasn't until later in the decade cause of SNL that it really got popular:
I'm not really sure that these next guys are really one hit wonders or not, but this is really the only song of theirs that I liked, so there you go:
Then of course this was probably the "Weak"est song that was a hit in 1993:
Now, this next group needs a little explaining, they were originally named Green Jello, and their gimmick was they were just going to be a band that made just music videos, they weren't going to release albums or tour or anything, just have music videos, well after they got a hit with this next song, they then decided to release an album rather than just a video, and then they got sued by Jell-O and had to change their name to Green Jelly, but before all that, they gave us a new twist on an old tale.
Hey, remember Meat Loaf, before he went crazy on Celebrity Apprentice? Well, he was back from Hell or went back into hell, or something in 1993 and had a big hit with this song, which I'm honestly still confused about, what is it he won't do exactly?
Ok, now believe it or not, 1993 was the last time that Billy Joel released a new album, sure there have been plenty of greatest hits and old stuff that he put out there, but he hasn't had a new album in 18 years, now, I realized that he has been through a lot, but it's amazing that he hasn't had a new album since then, but you know what, album wasn't that great, and maybe he just figured at that point, ok, I;m done, that;s fine, I got enough music to work with, this is what people are gonna want to hear anyway, grunge and gangsta rap were talking over, he wasn't gonna be bringing in a new audience with any of his new music, so whatever, just tour and play the old stuff, makes sense, but anyway, here was the title song from his last album:
So, the big thing in 1993 was soundtracks, there were a lot of hits from soundtracks, and while not a ton of movies did very well in 1993 cause everyone was going to see Jurassic Park, some of these movies had good soundtracks, my favorite was Last Action Hero, which produced 4 singles, first of which actually featured Arnold in the video:
Next up, Megadeth were a little upset and apparently not for the first time:

and a couple steps behind Def :Leppard did their thing:
Not sure I've mentioned this before, but the drummer for Def Leppard only has 1 arm, which actually brings up something else, cause I don't know how I left this out when I was going through the 80s, but the drummer for the Grateful Dead only has one leg or something like that, and in what was their biggest hit, which came in the 80s, Touch of Grey, they reference this, and it was a great video, so not sure how I left it out, so take a break and go back for a minute:
And speaking of forgetting 80s videos, and maybe I forgot this one cause I wanted to forget it ever happened, and Family Guy did a great job with talking about it, and totally blew up my spot, but the video with Mick Jagger and David Bowie for Dancing in the Streets, well, just take a look:
Yeah, I don't know, lets just move on. Coneheads came out in 93 and had this song on the soundtrack:
Sharon Stone was pretty big around this time and had a movie that came out called Sliver, and well, it featured this Number 1 hit by UB40 who decided, Elvis was cool, so let's do one of his songs:
Speaking of Cover songs, there was another cover song that was big in 1993, and while it was not on a movie soundtrack, it was certainly on the soundtrack to my 1993:
I will point out that they did screw that song up, first couple times the chorus is supposed to be "When you coming home Dad." then it switched to Son, but they just did Son the whole time. Anyway back to movies, Johnny Depp was in this kinda goofy movie called Benny and Joon, and it featured a goofy song on the soundtrack, which for some reason everyone loved:
1993 was a pretty big year for some new artists, some of them went on to bigger and better things, some of them kinda fizzled out and didn't do much else, or in this case, some of them died:
I was actually not a huge fan of that song when it came out, actually found it kinda annoying and thought the video was stupid, but over the years it kinda grew on me and now I like it, and the same could be said for this next song:
of course as this song grew on me, the band started to hate it and I don't think they even like to acknowledge that it's even their song anymore. Once again, the same could probably be said about this next song, but to be honest, I'm still not totally sure that I like it, but it was a hit in 1993:
If nothing else, the band had a pretty good name. And who doesn't remember this song all the way back from 1993:
Now in the depressing world of Seattle grunge music and all that stuff, it was nice once in a while to break it up with some fun rock I guess, which that song did to some degree, and this song as well:
On the other hand, this song did not, talk about depressing grunge music, these guys weren't from Seattle, but still:
Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots got everyone on board for what has been one hell of a ride, and considering the amount of people in the music world that have died over the years, it's impressive that he is still with us, and it all started when this song took off:
If people weren't looking to be freaked out by music videos, the these guys weren't on the right page, but you know what, people seems to love these creepy videos, the pictures inside their albums, maybe not so much, but there is a reason why they are named Tool:
Now, back in the late 70s Dave Coverdale did a solo album, name of the album was White Snake, which would eventually become the name of his band, the band would release an album in the early 80s that featured a song called Here I Go Again, so you are probably all thinking, sure I know that song, well maybe you do, but you probably don't cause the version that got popular was actually on their 1987 album and was referred to as Here I Go Again '87. So, you're probably saying to yourself, what's the point of all this and what does it have to do with 93? Well, I similar thing took place in 1993 with Danzig, in 1988 Danzig released their first album and it had a song called Mother on it, it was a single and did alright, although the video was banned from MTV cause it was too violent or whatever, so it never really got a huge audience, fast forward to 1993, Danzig had a live EP coming out and to promote hit, released Mother '93 and had a video for it, which was not banned:
Ok, well, there's an issue with this, this version, was not the version on the EP, the version on the EP was an actual live version and sounded nothing like this, this was simply the original version of the song with crowd noises dubbed in the background. Oh Danzig, why to put one over on everyone, but everyone was rocking to that song in 93, 5 years after it came out, nicely played.
Hey, remember Cracker, No? well do you remember this song, cause I'm guessing you do:
18 years ago these guys came along with this song, and people were like "What?" and they are still around today and people are still like "What?" but hey, She Don't Use Jelly:
These next guys really weren't doing all too much, and then Beavis and Butt-head said they were cool, and things took off for them after that:
So, yup, if it hadn't of been for Beavis and Butt-head we may never had gotten a remake to Halloween, so take that for what it is.
Now while Snoop may have been asking people what his name was, these guys knew what their name was and wanted you to know:
Local boys Mighty Mighty Bosstones burst on the scene with this hit:
Speaking of local boys, Aerosmith had a huge year in 1993 with their followup to Pump, Get a Grip, they also made it a big year for Alica Silverstone, who, although was in the movie Crush, no one really knew who she was until she was in the video for Cryin' which would go on to win the Video Music of The Year award at the 1994 VMAs. Also, pay close attention to the guy that steals the bag.
Did that guy look familiar, well if you are a fan of Lost, he should, that was Sawyer, even back then he was trying to scam women out of their money. Anyway, got a bit of an issue with the end of this video, I'm no scientist or doctor or physicist or anything, but pretty sure if she fell like that and had a cord attacked to her belly button piercing it would rip right out and she would have fallen and splatter on the road below and gotten run over, no? Maybe that was a little harsh, maybe I didn't need to go there, so to cheer you up, here's some REM from 1993:
Wait, what? that didn't cheer you up, that just made you more depressed, well, welcome to the 90s. Couple of foreign bands did ok for themselves in 1993, including the band so nice they named them twice, Duran Duran:
and then the next group, who after having a great album to followup a great album before that, seemingly rushed into their next album, and well, it wasn't good, and neither was the one after that, U2 really only had 1 good album in the 90s, but at least this song had a kinda interesting video:
This next one, maybe it wasn't a big hit in a lot of peoples eyes, but Anthrax were back, they had a new singer, a new attitude and a new song and made one of my favorite albums of all time, and also put out this song which at one point James Hetfield from Metallica called a "Perfect Song"
Guns N' Roses finished off their Trilogy with Estranged, they also finished up their Illusions tour, and people were ready to hear some new music from them, unfortunately they gave us The Spaghetti Incident? and then broke up.
1993 would also mark the release of the last album from Nirvana, and their last music video for Heart Shaped Box
Nirvana would go on and do MTV Unplugged later in the year, and took an interesting approach with it and didn't really play their hits, instead doing weird covers and a bunch of Meat Puppet songs, and then something happened, but we'll get to that in the next post.
You will notice that there is one band that I did not mention here that had a huge 1993, and that would be Pearl Jam, well, simply put after being at the 1993 VMA awards performing Animal:
Then Rockin in the Free World with Neil Young:
Then winning video of the year for Jeremy and Eddie Vedder swearing an live TV a couple times, Pearl Jam pretty much decided they were done with MTV, didn't make an videos for their singles for their new album Vs, which actually up until a week or 2 before it was released was gonna be called Five Against One, and in fact the original cassette that I had said Five Against One on it and not Vs. Anyway, it ended up selling over 950,000 copies in its first week breaking Guns N' Roses record for a couple years before, so I guess not having a video didn't hurt them.
Also, 1993 saw the release of this:
And in the same thought as that, 1993 was the year that Michael Jordan retired the first time, and SNL did a music tribute to him to get him not to retire, sorry about the quality, only version I could find:
